The Gospel of Mark opens with a bold declaration: the King has come. In Mark 1:1–8, we are introduced to Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and to John the Baptist—the promised herald sent to prepare the way for the Lord. This sermon sets the stage for the Gospel of Mark by showing us the historical setting, the prophetic fulfillment, and the urgent call to repentance that accompanies the arrival of the Messiah. John the Baptist confronts sinners with their need for cleansing, humbles himself before the coming Christ, and points beyond outward religion to the inward work of the Holy Spirit. Mark’s Gospel reminds us that Christianity is not built on human messengers, moral effort, or religious rituals, but on the saving power of Jesus Christ alone. The King has been announced, repentance has been called for, and the promise of new life by the Holy Spirit is set before us.
