In Mark 1:14–20, Jesus steps forward to proclaim the kingdom of God and to summon men to follow Him. After the arrest of John the Baptist, Christ publicly announces that the appointed time has come: the kingdom is at hand. The King commands all to repent and believe the gospel. But the proclamation of the kingdom is not merely information—it demands allegiance. Jesus calls ordinary fishermen to leave their nets, their livelihood, and even family expectations in order to follow Him. His call is sovereign, effectual, and costly. When the King speaks, obedience follows. This passage confronts us with a personal question: When Christ calls, will we follow? Or will we cling to our nets? The King who summons allegiance is the same King who gave His life to redeem rebels and grant eternal life to all who repent and believe.
